Contacting a therapist might seem daunting at first but we are here to help you make sense of difficult thoughts and feelings in a sensitive and non-judgemental way. Talking about your problems in confidence can feel as a relief and help you feel less alone and overwhelmed.
The first session will last approximately 60 minutes for individuals, couple counselling between 1-2 hours and is an opportunity to meet your therapist and see how therapy might be of benefit to you. During the first session, you will usually be asked to let your therapist know about your concerns and what you hope to resolve within the sessions. You may also have questions you wish to ask and to think about whether you would like a few sessions to address a particular issue or to have longer term therapy to think about your relationships and life in more depth.
Following an initial meeting, your therapist will arrange weekly sessions which last for 50 minutes for individuals and 1-2 hours for couples. These are held on the same day and time each week. Regular meetings are an essential part of therapy as it becomes possible to maintain focus on your concerns without other life events becoming a distraction. Frequent sessions also allow a shared understanding of issues to develop between client and therapist, hopefully leaving the client feeling safe and respected so that therapy can be successful. Longer gaps mean therapy becomes more about catching up on events instead of being able to concentrate on a particular issue.
